“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or what person is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf of bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? So if you, despite being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus offers a simple yet profound invitation: “Ask… seek… knock.” These are not passive suggestions—they are active steps calling us into a deeper, persistent relationship with God. Jesus is teaching us the heart of prayer: God is not distant, reluctant, or indifferent. He is a Father who delights in giving good gifts to His children.
To ask is to express dependence. To seek is to pursue God with intention. To knock is to continue trusting even when the answer seems delayed.
Jesus assures us that our prayers do not fall on deaf ears. God hears, responds, and gives in ways that flow from His perfect wisdom and love. Even earthly parents know how to give good gifts—how much more will our Father in heaven respond to His children?
Jesus concludes this section with what we often call the Golden Rule: “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” When we experience God’s generous goodness, it should reshape the way we treat others. A heart touched by grace becomes a heart that extends grace.
Why It Matters
- Persistence in prayer strengthens our faith. Asking, seeking, and knocking reflect a lifestyle of trust. God often uses the process of seeking to transform our desires and align our hearts with His.
- God’s goodness gives us confidence. We don’t pray to a reluctant God. We pray to a Father who is eager to bless, guide, and provide what is truly best.
- Receiving God’s love inspires love toward others. The Golden Rule is rooted in the generosity of God. When we understand how deeply God cares for us, we become more intentional in caring for others.
- Prayer keeps our hearts soft. Bringing needs, worries, and desires before God keeps us close to His heart and shields us from bitterness, anxiety, and self-reliance.
This passage reminds us that prayer is not a ritual but a relationship—God inviting His children into ongoing conversation and trust.
A Prayer for Today
Father, teach me to come to You with confidence—to ask boldly, seek faithfully, and knock persistently. Help me trust Your goodness even when the answer looks different than I expect. Shape my heart through Your generosity so that I may treat others with the same grace You have shown me. Amen.

- Where in your life is God inviting you to ask, seek, or knock with renewed faith?
- What keeps you from praying consistently or confidently?
- How has God shown His goodness to you recently?
- In what ways can you practice the Golden Rule more intentionally today?
