“Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:12)
The Christian life is often described as a battle. Paul wasn’t talking about physical violence but about the spiritual struggles we face against sin, temptation, and the enemy of our souls. Every believer is in this fight — the question is not whether we will fight, but how we will fight.
The Lord Is Watching
Paul reminded Timothy that God Himself sees the way we live. Our Commander is never absent or unaware. His eyes are upon us, not to condemn, but to strengthen and reward the faithful. This truth encourages us to keep going, even when the fight feels long and hard.
The Example of Jesus
Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate and could have compromised, but He remained faithful to His mission. He endured the cross because of the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2–3). When we are tempted to give up, we can look to Jesus — the One who fought the greatest battle of all and won salvation for us. Our rally cry becomes, “Remember Jesus!”
The Return of Christ
Paul urged Timothy to hold fast “until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Timothy 6:14). One day Jesus will return — not as the humble Lamb, but as the conquering King of kings and Lord of lords. Though we may lose some skirmishes here, the victory is already won in Christ. We are on the winning side.
The Hope of Immortality
Christ alone has immortality (1 Timothy 6:16). Because He rose victorious over sin and death, we too share in that victory. One day, we will receive glorified bodies and live forever in His presence. This hope gives us courage to press on, knowing that death itself has been defeated.
Pressing On in the Fight
Life’s battles can be discouraging, but Paul’s charge still rings true: “Fight the good fight of faith.” Don’t quit, don’t compromise, and don’t lose heart. Keep your eyes on Jesus, your Commander and King. One day, we will lay down our armor — not in defeat, but in victory, joining Christ in His eternal triumph.
Lord, help me to fight the good fight of faith. Strengthen me when I am weary, remind me of Christ’s example, and fix my eyes on the hope of eternity with You. Amen.
