Understanding the divine nature of Jesus is foundational to the Christian faith. It’s not just about belief but about meditating on Scripture to grasp this profound truth. Jesus, the eternal Word, embodies God’s love and redemption, offering salvation through His life, death, and resurrection. His identity as God is essential to His lordship and our reconciliation with God.
In the Beginning Was the Word
The Gospel of John opens with the powerful declaration: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
This verse affirms Jesus’ preexistence and divinity, highlighting His role in creation: “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being” (John 1:3).
Jesus is not merely a messenger; He is God incarnate, actively involved in creating and sustaining all things. His unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit reflects the triune nature of God.
Fully God and Fully Man
Jesus’ dual nature, known as the hypostatic union, is central to Christian theology. He is fully God, as seen in Colossians 2:9: “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.”
Yet, He is fully man, able to empathize with human struggles and redeem humanity. This union is a mystery that deepens our awe and reverence for Christ.
Created Through Him and For Him
Scripture underscores Jesus’ role in creation. Colossians 1:16-17 states: “For by Him all things were created… all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
As the divine Creator, Jesus is both the source and purpose of all existence. His sustaining power assures us of His continuous involvement in the world and in our lives.
The Father Confirms Jesus
The Father’s affirmations during Jesus’ baptism (Mark 1:10-11) and Transfiguration (Mark 9:7) confirm His divine sonship. These moments reveal the unity of the Trinity and call us to listen to and follow Jesus.
Christ’s Supremacy
Hebrews 1:1-3 declares Jesus as the ultimate revelation of God, the Creator, and the exact representation of His nature. This supremacy demands our worship and submission, affirming that Jesus is Lord because He is God.
