Last time, we explored the power of prayer and its vital role in uniting a family under God’s guidance. Today, we turn our focus to the concept of submission within the family. Submission is often misunderstood, but when rooted in love and respect, it becomes a powerful way to honor God and strengthen the family unit. Let’s delve into what it means to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ and how this mutual submission fosters harmony and peace in our homes.
Paul instructs believers in Ephesians 5:21 NIV, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Submission within the family context involves understanding and respecting each other’s roles. Wives are to submit to their husbands, husbands are to love their wives and consider their needs, children are to obey their parents, and parents are to raise their children according to God’s Word without provoking them. This mutual submission fosters love and harmony in the home.
Children are also called to submit to their elders, as Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:5. This means respecting and obeying those in authority, such as parents and grandparents. Submission should be done with joy and without complaint (Philippians 2:14–16; Hebrews 13:17).
Paul sums up this order of submission in Colossians 3:18–21.
Ultimately, all family members must submit to Christ. When each person honors their role and submits to one another in love, the family reflects the order and peace that God desires.
Next time, we will explore the importance of submitting to one another.
