In our last discussion, we explored why it is important for children to gain wisdom and understanding. Today, we’ll delve into the topic of discipline and disobedience, focusing on how God’s guidance shapes our lives.
Read Deuteronomy 21:18-21, Proverbs 3:11-12, and Hebrews 12:4-11
In the Old Testament, the law prescribed severe consequences for disobedience. Deuteronomy 21:18-21 outlines a process for dealing with a stubborn and rebellious child, including the extreme measure of stoning. Thankfully, we no longer face such harsh penalties. However, these scriptures underscore a critical principle: God takes disobedience seriously and values discipline.
While we are no longer punished under the Old Testament law, God continues to discipline us as a sign of His love. Proverbs 3:11-12 reminds us, “My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD Or loathe His rebuke, For whom the LORD loves He disciplines, Just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.” Discipline is an expression of God’s love and His desire for our growth and success.
Hebrews 12:4-11 expands on this concept, explaining that divine discipline is a sign of God’s fatherly love. Just as earthly fathers correct their children to guide them, so does God discipline us for our benefit. The passage acknowledges that while discipline may seem painful, it ultimately “yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.”
When facing discipline from parents or God, it’s important to maintain the right attitude. Rather than allowing it to foster resentment or anger, view discipline as an opportunity for growth and trust that it is for your benefit. Parents, though well-intentioned, are human and may make mistakes. If you feel mistreated, bring your concerns to God in prayer and continue to uphold obedience.
Obedience to parents and to God is essential, even when it’s difficult. Responding to discipline with trust and humility aligns us with God’s purpose and prepares us to live righteously.
Join us next time as we explore how children can set an example for others, reflecting God’s love and guidance in their lives.
