In this lesson, we will explore the importance of seeking wisdom and understanding, as guided by biblical principles.

Wisdom is one of the most valuable treasures we can pursue in life, and the Bible offers clear guidance on how to obtain it. Beyond the wisdom that parents can provide, one of the best ways to grow in understanding is by studying the book of Proverbs. This book, written by Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, is filled with practical advice and divine insight. A simple way to incorporate this into your daily routine is to read one chapter of Proverbs each day. For instance, if today is the first day of the month, read Proverbs 1; if it is the second day, read Proverbs 2, and so on. Over time, this habit will deepen your understanding and help you apply godly wisdom to your life.

Another way to gain wisdom is by surrounding yourself with godly friends who can offer wise counsel. Proverbs 11:14 tells us, “Where there is no guidance the people fall, But in an abundance of counselors there is victory.” Having a few trusted, wise friends can provide the support and advice needed to navigate life’s challenges. However, be mindful not to seek too many opinions, as Proverbs 18:24 warns that this can lead to confusion. The key is to find a balance—having a few close, godly friends who can guide you is more valuable than having numerous voices offering conflicting advice.

Choosing your friends wisely is crucial. Proverbs 13:20 advises, “One who walks with wise people will be wise, But a companion of fools will suffer harm.” The company you keep has a significant impact on your life. Surrounding yourself with the wrong crowd can lead you astray, as Paul cautions in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.’” Therefore, it’s important to build relationships with those who will encourage you to grow in wisdom and live a godly life.

Solomon, renowned for his unparalleled wisdom, received this gift because he asked God for it. In 1 Kings 3:5-14 and 2 Chronicles 1:6-12, we learn that Solomon’s request for wisdom pleased God so much that He granted it abundantly. Solomon’s wisdom wasn’t just for his own benefit; he passed it on through his writings, urging others to seek wisdom as well.

To be more successful in life, we must practice wisdom and seek to please God. Prosperity in all areas of life is tied to wisdom and understanding, and these are gifts that God willingly grants to those who ask. James 1:5 encourages us, “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

In your pursuit of wisdom, seek it diligently through the Word, godly counsel, and prayer. By doing so, you’ll grow in understanding, make wise decisions, and live a life that honors God.
