As we have learned, women hold a vital role both within the home and in society. The Bible is filled with stories of women who made significant impacts, whether through their faithfulness and courage or through their ungodly actions.

In this lesson, we will explore the stories of a few key women mentioned in the Bible, drawing lessons from their lives.

Ruth: A Model of Faithfulness and Integrity

First, let’s delve into the story of Ruth. I encourage you to read the entire Book of Ruth for a fuller understanding.

Ruth was a young widow who faced significant loss—she lost her husband, father-in-law, and brother-in-law. Despite her grief, Ruth chose to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, demonstrating deep loyalty and love. When Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem, Ruth went with her, leaving behind her homeland and embracing Naomi’s people and God as her own.

In Bethlehem, Ruth met Boaz while gleaning in his fields. Boaz, a man of integrity, showed Ruth great kindness. When Naomi learned about Boaz, she recognized him as a potential kinsman-redeemer—a role defined in Deuteronomy 25:5-10 that allowed a close relative to marry a widow to preserve the family line. Following Naomi’s wise counsel, Ruth approached Boaz, who eventually fulfilled the role of kinsman-redeemer by marrying her.

Ruth’s story is a powerful testament to her godly character, loyalty, and faith. God blessed Ruth’s faithfulness, making her and Boaz the great-grandparents of King David, and placing her in the lineage of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).

Esther: Courageous Leadership and Divine Wisdom

Next, let’s examine the story of Esther. I encourage you to read the entire Book of Esther to grasp the depth of her story.

Esther was an orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai. When King Ahasuerus (King Xerxes I) deposed Queen Vashti, Esther was chosen as the new queen. Despite her position, Esther remained humble and obedient to Mordecai’s guidance.

Mordecai uncovered a plot to assassinate the king, which Esther reported, saving the king’s life. Meanwhile, Haman, a high-ranking advisor, plotted to annihilate the Jews. Esther, after fasting and praying for courage and wisdom, approached the king uninvited—a bold move that could have cost her life. She revealed Haman’s evil plan and petitioned the king to save her people. Her bravery and wisdom led to the preservation of the Jewish nation.

Esther’s story highlights her godly character, respect for her husband, and boldness in standing up for her people, even at great personal risk.

The Virtuous Woman: A Timeless Example

For another example of a godly woman, I encourage you to study the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31:10-31. This passage paints a portrait of a woman who is industrious, wise, and deeply devoted to her family and God. She is a model of what it means to live a life that honors God in every aspect—whether at home, in the community, or in her relationship with others.

Jezebel: A Warning Against Wickedness

In contrast to these examples of godly women, let’s consider Jezebel, a woman known for her wickedness. Her story can be found in 1 Kings 16:29-32, 18:13-46, 19:1-3, 21:1-16, and 2 Kings 9:1-37.

Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab, was a fierce opponent of God and His prophets. She worshiped Baal and led Israel into idolatry, wielding significant negative influence over her husband. Jezebel’s most notorious act was having Naboth killed simply because he refused to sell his vineyard to Ahab. Her life ended as prophesied—she was thrown from a window, and dogs devoured her remains, a grim reminder of the consequences of living in rebellion against God.

Jezebel serves as a stark warning of how ungodly actions and influence can lead to destructive ends.

A Call to Godliness

As women, strive to emulate the faithfulness, courage, and integrity of Ruth and Esther. Their lives serve as powerful examples of how godly women can make a lasting impact in both their families and society. At the same time, be vigilant to avoid the path of Jezebel, whose life exemplifies the dangers of ungodliness and rebellion.
