Making Jesus your Lord and Savior is the greatest thing anyone can ever do. So what does it mean to make Jesus you Lord and Savior?
First, to make Jesus your Savior means that you are in need of salvation. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” If you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, then you will be saved. Saved from what? Saved from the eternal death of hell. Hell is separation from God for all eternity. If Jesus is your Savior, then you will receive eternal life with your Savior.
Jesus died for you. He took the punishment of sin when He died on the cross. First Peter 2:24 says, “And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.” All you have to do is accept His forgiveness and begin a relationship with Him as your Lord. When we begin this relationship with Him, we become righteous. Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
We have already established that sin is in the world. Everyone has sinned. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Everyone is in need of saving because everyone has sinned, and everyone deserves the punishment of eternal death. However, you can be saved by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Second, to make Jesus your Lord means that you follow Him and obey Him. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are beginning a new relationship. You begin to grow in your relationship with your new Lord. Jesus wants to transform your life for the better. He will make you a new creation. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
Who can receive this gift of salvation? Anyone! John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Whosoever believes can receive salvation. God wants all of us to come to repentance. Second Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” However, we are never promised tomorrow, so do not delay making Jesus your Lord and Savior.
If you have not received Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and you want to do that now, just open your heart to accept His forgiveness. You may pray the following prayer (this is just an example prayer; you may pray however you like):
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for my sins. Please forgive me for all of my sins. Renew my life. Help me to become more like You through a daily relationship. Be the Lord and Savior of my life. I pray this in Jesus’s name. Amen!
If you prayed this prayer or anything similar and you meant it in your heart, then you are saved. Romans 10:9–10 says, “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
If you just completed this important step in your life, I encourage you to tell someone. Find another believer and tell them. Attend a good Bible-believing church. Seek advice from the pastor or another mature Christian. Grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer and Bible study.
