As we’ve learned, God established marriage and family from the very beginning. However, when Adam and Eve sinned, that sin was passed down to each of us. To truly fulfill our God-given design, we must study what the Bible teaches about marriage and family and strive to fulfill our purpose within the home.
God has assigned each person a unique role in the family, and in this lesson, we will focus on the role of the wife.
Read Ephesians 5:22-24 and 1 Peter 3:1-6
These scriptures highlight several key responsibilities for a wife within the family:
- Submission to Her Husband: The Bible calls the wife to submit to her husband. This role is often misunderstood, but it is not a sign of inferiority or a loss of dignity. Instead, it is a divine arrangement that reflects God’s design for order and harmony in the family. Submission is about respect and acknowledging the husband’s leadership in the marriage. Think of it as a dance—one partner leads, not because they are superior, but to ensure that the dance flows smoothly and beautifully. Both partners are equal in worth, but for the sake of unity, one must take the lead.
- Being an Example: A wife is also called to be an example to her husband, even if he is not living according to God’s ways. Whether her husband is an unbeliever or is straying from God’s path, the wife is encouraged to remain steadfast, respectful, and loving. Her actions and demeanor can be a powerful witness, drawing her husband closer to God through her example.
- True Beauty: While physical beauty has its place, the Bible emphasizes that true beauty comes from within. A wife’s character, her attitude, and her actions are what truly reflect her beauty. A gentle, loving, and kind spirit is precious in God’s sight and has a lasting impact, far beyond the superficial.
As wives, embracing these responsibilities allows you to fulfill your God-given role and bring glory to God through your marriage.
